Casa SAY

Reuniting families is the goal of the staff at our eight-bed 24-hour shelter for homeless/runaway youth in Mountain View. Annually, 75% of the 75 to 80 youth sheltered and counseled return to their families upon completing the intensive therapeutic program. Reunited families are encouraged to work with our aftercare staff to cement the new patterns of communicating and problem-solving established while at Casa SAY. For those not able to return home because the home is unsafe or too unstable, staff works with County social workers to place them in a safe environment.

Truancy Abatement

Working with chronic truants and their parents to overcome the factors leading to poor attendance, Truancy Abatement Case managers concentrate on problem-solving and goal-setting.

Available in West San Jose, Cupertino and Sunnyvale school districts, staff work with 140 middle and high school students annually. They assist with everything from arranging for testing for special learning needs, to getting alarm clocks, to securing tutoring. They motivate youth to succeed in school with such activities as getting library cards and arranging community college tours.

Educational Mentor Program

Well-trained volunteer mentors from diverse backgrounds and professions pledge a year to mentor and advocate for youth who are determined to achieve their educational goals.

The youth are drawn from our Independent Living, Casa SAY and Truancy Abatement Programs. They may be striving to remain in community college while struggling to maintain stable housing and work at a part-time job. They may be chronic truants determined to begin to succeed in school. They may be at the fourth high school in two years because they’ve been placed in four foster homes in different school districts in that time.

Volunteers are trained and supported by staff as they themselves support and guide their assigned youth, help with paperwork, find resources, always listen and take their youth on fun and educational outings.
